Daniel Guerra Giraldez
Biologist and Master in Biochemistry from the Peruvian University Cayetano Heredia, he received his doctorate in Biomedical Sciences at the Université Catholique de Louvain in 2005. He worked as a postdoc at the University of California at Berkeley, and since 2009 has directed the laboratory of Single-Molecules Biophysics at the Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia. His research highlights an interest in the biophysics of transcription in Escherichia coli and Mycobacterium tuberculosis. More recently, his projects take advantage of the manipulation of gene expression in bacteria for various biotechnological applications.
Minister Meryame Kitir
Meryame Kitir is een echte Maasmechelse. Ze is er geboren en getogen, ze weet dan ook wat er leeft bij de mensen. In 2006 merkte sp.a haar maatschappelijke en sociale inzet op en vroeg haar de stap naar de politiek te zetten. In dat jaar werd Meryame verkozen tot gemeenteraadslid in Maasmechelen. Een jaar later zette ze haar eerste stappen in de Kamer, als federaal volksvertegenwoordiger. Toch blijft Meryame in de eerste plaats een syndicaliste. Ondanks haar federaal mandaat blijft ze actief op Ford Genk, dichtbij de mensen op de werkvloer en in contact met de bedrijfsleiding en zoekt steeds oplossingen die goed zijn voor de werknemers en jobzekerheid bieden.
Meryame Kitir is sinds 10 juni 2007 federaal Volksvertegenwoordiger voor de kieskring provincie Limburg. In de kamer van Volksvertegenwoordigers houdt ze zich hoofdzakelijk bezig met sociale thema's. In 2015 nam Meryame Kitir de fakkel als fractievoorzitter van de sp.a in het Federaal Parlement over van Karin Temmerman.
Ze blijft zich focussen op thema's die te maken hebben met werk en sociale dumping. In 2020 werd ze minister van ontwikkelingssamenwerking in de regering Alexander De Croo I.
Dr Akanimo Odon holds a Master’s Degree in Environmental Rehabilitation, a PhD in Environmental Management from Lancaster University, UK and business and enterprise certifications and fellowships from Cambridge University UK, Stanford University USA and MIT USA. He specializes in cross-border education and innovations in research and is an expert in navigating, developing and managing relationships between academia, government and industry in Africa for economic viability, research impact and student employability. He has been Africa Strategy Adviser for Lancaster University; Aberystwyth University, University of Strathclyde; University of East Anglia; and currently he is the African Regional Adviser for the University of London, a role he has performed in for the last two years. He recently founded Flexy-Learn (www.flexylearn.com), a one-stop online shop for distance learning provision for Africa. He is also the creator of the UK Certified Careers Enhancement Programme Online, one of the most comprehensive career programmes in Africa.
In the UK, he has been an Adviser to the British Government on developing international education policies under the National Student Forum; Education Consultant for British Council; Business Development Consultant for the Grow Creative Scheme under the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF); Local Content Consultant to City and Guilds UK; and Local Content Adviser to BG Group. In Africa, he has been Strategy Consultant for the National Centre for Energy and Environment under the Energy Commission of the Presidency, Nigeria; Technical Adviser for Lagos State Ministry of Environment; Non-Resident Research Fellow of the African Centre for Technological Studies, Kenya; Adviser for Africa Centre for Energy Policy in Ghana; Consultant for Trust Africa Senegal, reviewing capacity building policies in Nigeria, Mali, Bostwana, Ethiopia, Ghana, Gabon and Egypt; Adviser to the National Social Security Fund (NSSF) Tanzania; Local Content Consultant to the African Development Bank; and also consulted for the Nigerian Liquefied Natural Gas on capacity building.
He has been Adviser to the National Economic Empowerment Council Tanzania under the Prime Minister’s Office; the Southern Agricultural Growth Corridor of Tanzania (SAGCOT); and a visiting professor to Strathmore University Kenya. He has delivered training to over 50 African Universities especially on internationalization of education and research strategies and bridging gaps between academia and industry. He is also an expert in resource mobilization and international research funding and have won in excess of 40 million pounds in the last two years for over 20 African research partners. He is also currently the Africa Adviser on the 7 million pounds UK Government Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF) Lancaster University RECIRCULATE project which focuses on capacity building for a circular water economy in six African countries – Kenya, Ghana, Nigeria, Malawi, Zambia and Botswana. He is also African Adviser on the 20 million pounds UK Government GCRF Strathclyde University One Oceans Management project in Africa and sits as a member of the Board of Directors of the largest and most reputable Think-Tank organization in Africa, the Africa Technology Policy Studies Network, ATPS, headquartered in Nairobi Kenya.
In the last ten years, Odon has organized and facilitated over 50 Africa-focused international workshops and conferences; liaised and collaborated with government, industries and academia in over 30 African countries; developed over 100 strategic educational, research and commercial partnerships between UK and African organizations; facilitated and supported the setting up of over 30 African-focused SMEs; designed and implemented over 40 strategic capacity building and knowledge transfer schemes and programmes; delivered innovative research impact and management training to over a thousand African researchers and mentored over 1000 young African researchers and entrepreneurs under XN Foundation (www.xnfoundation.org) an NGO he founded ten years ago. He is an author of two literary books (a novel and an anthology of poetry) and a practical career transformation book titled ‘The Graduate Code’. He is a poet and a multi-award winning film producer for his recent feature-length movie DRY and sits on the governing board of one of the most reputable arts and theatre organization in England, The Dukes Theatre UK.
Dirk Van Merode MSc finished his engineering studies in Electronics in 2002. His first educational experience was in secondary education, to earn his pedagogy degree. Dirk later moved to Lessius University College, currently renamed Thomas More University College, in 2007, to take up a teaching and research assignment. Since 2018 Dirk works as a lecturer and research engineer at AP University College in Antwerp. His field of expertise is in Internet-of-Things, digital systems design, printed circuit board design and production, embedded systems and audio-video production. Research topics are mainly in European projects, both on curriculum development and student and staff mobility with countries outside the EU. Dirk also did research in space applications and satellite development. He was partner and coordinator of numerous international projects. He was guest professor and advisor in numerous European, Asian and African universities.Dirk is currently coordinator of an Erasm s+ KA2 Capacity Buidling for Higher Education project, named ACTEA: Applied Curricula in Technology for East Africa. The ACTEA project aims to fulfil the specific needs in engineering, provide better skills matching with the local labour market, deliver course material in 2 specializations, Computer Aided Manufacturing Technology and Electrical Engineering & Automation and, establish technologic laboratories, with virtual and remote accessibility, establish learning tools, give academic staff and students additional training on technology and in developing technologic course material according to EU standards.
In 2001 Tom Peeters obtained this masters in biology at KU Leuven (Belgium). Next he went to the University of Florida (USA) to gain more experience in biotechnological research. Back in Belgium, he started his PhD at KU Leuven elucidating signal transductions in yeast. After graduating in 2007, he started his post-doctoral research in synthetic biology at UPF in Barcelona (Spain), where he rewired yeast cells to behave as logic gates for biocomputing. This experience triggered his enthusiasm for the fascinating field of synthetic biology.

An Winnepenninckx, was part of the first Belgian grauates of the Master in Tourism programm of KU Leuven.
Acquired experience in different fields in the tourism industry, she started her academic career in 2006. Currently she is head of the associate decree in Lodging, Restaurant and Catering Management at Vives Brugge. She keeps finger on the pulse in teaching marketing, hotel organization and rooms division both in associate degree as bachelor programs.
Since her visit at the Mountain of the Moon University in Uganda, she is providing know how and exchanges best practices with colleagues in Uganda.
